Number the Stars
End of Novel Project
This project will be due next Friday, March 27th. I will give you some time in class to complete this, but you may have to do some of it at home. You will choose one of the following topics to research, using a variety of sources. The information may be presented in the form of a slide presentation (powerpoint,) a brochure, or a research paper. If you choose the slide presentation or brochure, pictures must be included, and all sides of the brochure should be completed. The research paper should be a five paragraph essay (more paragraphs may be included, if needed.) Please remember to include your sources for the research.
The Resistance
In this story, the people of Denmark form a “resistance group” to try and create problems for the German soldiers. Do some research on this group. Try to find out: who some of their leaders were, what tactics they used to interfere with the German plans for Denmark, how they helped the Jewish people escape, and what happened if they were caught by the German soldiers.
The Treatment of the Jewish People During WWII
Jews were not only persecuted in Denmark, but all over Europe during World War II. Research the following: what Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany believed to be true about the Jewish people, what actions they took toward the Jewish people, what concentration camps were, and what happened with the Jewish people after the war was over.
Jewish Customs
In the book, events like the Jewish New Year and a necklace with the Star of David are mentioned. Do some research on other Jewish customs and present them to the class. Make sure to include at least 6 customs in your report and reasons why they are important to the Jewish people.
King Christian X
Research Christian X, who was portrayed in the novel as a very principled, courageous man. Find out how long he ruled the country, how he responded to the German invasion, and any other information you can find on this noble king.
Extension Activity
Design a postcard to send to Papa in Copenhagen. Use descriptions from the book to draw the postcard (countryside, farm of Uncle Henrik, the seashore, or a fishing boat). Write a message to Papa telling him of the trip to Uncle Henrik’s. Remember… The Nazis might intercept the mail, so you need to write in code.
