Plant & Animal Classification:
Here are some neat resources for classification

Plant Hunter This is a cool site where students collect various plants from the New York Botanical Garden. (I want a black pepper vine. See if you can find it.)

Classification Game: Not as easy as it looks. I didn't know dogs and humans would be classified as eating insects.

Animal Classification Game and Class: This one's a little simpler.

STEM!
My extension class is having a STEM challenge to build working batteries. Here is the first attempt using a potato. They are putting out .38 volts, about one fourth of the power in a AA battery.

Now they are trying different changes to their model to increase their efficiency.

If you were absent on September 1st, Tuesday, we talked about Specialized and Non-Specialized Cells.
Here are the three videos from that lesson. Please watch and get caught up.

Microorganisms:
Microorganisms in Pond Water

Some Highlights from yesterdays pond water. We looked for microorganisms under the microscope.
Any help identifying them would be graciously appreciated.

About me, Mr. Merritt Arnold,
I hate writing these autobiography snippets but I understand the need to know about who is teaching you and your children.

I attended Auburn University, (War Eagle) for my undergrad work. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1993. Seven years later I earned my Master's degree in Education Leadership from Georgia College and State University (Go Bobcats). Then in 2008 I earned my Specialist degree in Elementary Education from The University of Georgia (Go Dawgs).

I have my Educational Leadership certification for grades Pre-k through 12.
I have my Early Childhood Education certification for grades Pre-k through 5.
I have four Middle Grades certifications (endorsements) all for grades 4 through 8:

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
I have my ESOL Endorsement.
Lastly, I received my Georgia Master Teacher Certification in 2013.
This will be my nineteenth year of teaching children in elementary schools. I have taught in four different school systems in Georgia; one year as an In-School-Suspension teacher; two years as a third grade teacher; one year as a fourth grade teacher; and a whopping fourteen years in fifth grade (teaching Science and other subjects every year). This will be my first year teaching just Science and I couldn't be happier.

Okay, enough of the boring stuff.

I have a beautiful wife who is way out of my league, and three children whom I love and adore. I moved to Athens with every intention of getting a degree and leaving, but fell in love with this town and its people. Of course, as an educator I wanted my children to attend the best schools in Athens, thus, I chose Oconee County. You, as students and parents are so fortunate to be here, trust me, it's a great school.

Other interesting facts:
  • I love most outdoor activities and even painted my room to look like the outdoors.
  • I have a dog, a cat, and a flying squirrel (yes, I have a permit for the squirrel).
  • I water-ski, fish, hunt, cook, read, sing, build, tell jokes, play pranks, and drive the speed limit.
  • When I was 12 years old a Bengal Tiger at the Birmingham Zoo tried to kill me while I was dressed as Papa Smurf.
  • The Bengal Tiger did not succeed.
  • I do the best card trick ever.
